Veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi dies at 63

South Africa has lost one of its most respected performers after veteran actor and theatre practitioner Seputla Sebogodi died at the age of 63.

His family confirmed on Thursday that Sebogodi died on Wednesday evening following complications related to diabetes, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than four decades across theatre, television and film. The family requested privacy as they mourn his passing.

Known for his commanding presence on stage and screen, Sebogodi became a familiar face to millions of South Africans through roles in productions including Generations, Scandal!, Yizo Yizo, Suburban Bliss, Redemption and numerous acclaimed theatre productions.

Although widely recognised for his television work, colleagues often regarded theatre as the foundation of his career. Over several decades he appeared in productions such as Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial, Big Dada and Mooi Street Moves, earning a reputation as one of the country’s most accomplished stage actors.

His death comes only weeks after he performed in Black Moon during the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. Images from the production drew concern from fans online after he appeared noticeably frail, though it later emerged that his appearance formed part of the character he portrayed.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across South Africa’s arts community.

Actor Spaces described Sebogodi as “a giant of South African stage and screen”, while colleagues and fans have taken to social media to remember an actor whose work helped shape South African storytelling for generations.

Born in Soweto, Sebogodi dedicated much of his life to developing South African theatre and mentoring emerging performers. His influence extended beyond the characters he portrayed, with many younger actors citing him as an inspiration throughout their careers.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, industry organisations and fellow performers are expected to release further statements as tributes continue throughout the day.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by the family.
